In contrast to other single or multi-layer plastic materials currently in use, polymer Cali-5-Bond™ multi-layer foil gas, air, liquid and soil sampling bags are made by a patented production process. The process bonds multiple layers of material together into a single flexible sheet 5 mil (0.14 mm) thick.
The absolute barrier to air, gas or liquid permeation is a layer of aluminum foil, a proprietary formulation of HDPE forms the totally inert and non-reactive inner liner (wetted surface).
Multi-layer foil sampling bags can be a cost-effective alternative to canisters and tubes and are appropriate for many applications. Among the advantages offered by Cali-5-Bond™ bags over conventional sampling vessels (glass or metal containers) are their ease of use, even in hard-to-reach locations, low cost, and the trouble-free way they can be transported. Penn State University uses Cali-5-Bond™ Bags
Our current project involves the conversion of biomass into biogas using the process of anaerobic digestion. As a part of this project, we regularly collect and analyze biogas samples.
For this, we are using the Calibrated Instruments Inc. Cali-5-Bond™ Gas Sampling Bags. These bags are multilayered, sturdy, leakproof and work very well for collecting and storing our samples until we are able to analyze them.
An additional advantage is to be able to customize the size and the ports of the gas bags so that we can design them based on our needs for specific experiments. The bags come with valves and sampling ports as well, which makes the collection and analysis fairly easy. We have had good success with these and have been able to use them quite reliably for our needs.
Using Cali Bond Bags to Find Helium
I have been using Cali-5 Bond bags for soil gas sample for helium and hydrocarbon exploration for about 15 years. I like the replaceable septum on the 500 ml bags that prevent leakage of helium and hydrocarbons from the bags over considerable time. In June, I will collect soil gas samples in 500 ml Cali bags over a helium prospect in Arizona. The samples will be analyzed in the field using a portable quadrupole mass spectrometer for hydrocarbons and fixed gases including helium. The nice thing about Cali-5 bags is they won’t leak and you can take samples at atmospheric pressure, which is necessary for introducing the sample to the mass spec.

Leak Resistant Sampling
I work at a fluids Geochemical laboratory and we know from experience that the Cali-5-Bond bags are the most robust gas sampling vessel. Clients will drop off samples in cheap tedlar bags only to be disappointed when the results have been compromised due to vessel leakage. We always in turn recommend they use Cali-5-Bond bags in the future to drastically reduce this possibility. Cheap leaking tedlar bags will always change the isotopic results of the sample. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Industrial process and fundamental research applications are as numerous as the human imagination can be creative. New uses are literally discovered every day; and join applications as diverse as collecting vapors; liquids; and even odors for panel testing.
- Hard-to-Reach Locations – Ideal for use, bags are an essential supply item when stack testing CEMS or conducting FCC tests at petroleum refineries.
- Real-Time Gas Analysis Techniques – Often time restricts gas monitoring activity to a single fixed point. In contrast, totally portable gas sampling bags permit absolute freedom of movement and permit economic simultaneous sampling over a wide area.

PRESSURE & TEMPERATURE
Gas sampling bag inflation pressures need not exceed 7.0″ WG (17.4 mbar, 0.25 psi).
- Bags Should Not Be Over Inflated – When filled, they should not appear “tight”. Over-inflation may lead to premature bag failure. When bag samples are air transported, ample provision should be made for gas expansion at higher flight altitudes. Users should consult US Department of Transportation (DOT) Code of Federal Regulations (CFR 49) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) regulations which must be followed for the shipment of flammable and toxic gas(es) in gas sampling bags.
- Bags should not be used at temperatures higher than 125 – 130 °F (50 – 55 °C) – All polymer based gas sampling bags should be handled with extra care when used at constant gas volume temperatures above ambient, particularly above 110 – 115 °F (40 – 45 °C).
Consult our Technical Service Department before undertaking any “bake-out” preparation of the bags as part of an established sampling protocol.
If high temperature stack gases are to be collected, sample line tubing should be long enough to allow the sampled gas stream to cool before entering the bag. Depending upon final sample analysis requirements, it may be necessary to collect any condensed vapor in the sampling line; or to “dry out” the wet sample gas flow into the bag.
